Monaghan Primary Care Centre

The North Monaghan Primary Care Centre is a project for a 2-Team Primary Care Centre at Blackwater House St, Davnet’s Hospital Monaghan. It involved the alteration and conversion of an existing two storey Protected Structure into a modern healthcare facility delivering integrated primary community care services.  It further involves the re-organisation of existing, and the creation of, new car parking facilities to accommodate all parking requirements for other services on the campus as well as increased accommodation for the new PCC, visitors and staff including accessible parking spaces.

As with many primary care centres, the brief was extensive in its many departments, including GP surgeries and dental suites. The health space planning was exceedingly complicated as the linear narrow geometry of the building made appropriate adjacencies very hard to achieve. A key issue was to get natural light into the middle of the central two storey part of the building.  A long strip of roof above the central corridor was replaced with a glazed roof light and internally a dramatic new central double height staircase adjacent to the main reception and waiting area links all Community Care Departments and aids way-finding. We carefully designed a new external glazed canopy to be as near a match as possible to Burke’s original.
